Kalevi Aho
Violin Concerto No. 2
Description
“It’s a violin concerto in three movements on the traditional classical scheme, but it doesn’t sound traditional. It’s a concerto in the grand style, and extremely demanding for the soloist. In other words, it gets the very most out of the violin. I have tested all the solo parts in the concerto by playing them myself on the violin. The solo part is really difficult. The concerto is scored for an orchestral ensemble such as the Kymi Sinfonietta plus a couple of extras, such as a euphonium. It has been composed to suit both a large symphony orchestra and an ensemble of sinfonietta size. It really is a large-format concerto.”
