Description

The Candomino Choir, the poetry of Lassi Nummi, the culture of the Mediterranean - all these are things that I have become closely acquainted with over the years. These are also the anchor points for my Välimeri (Mediterranean Sea) suite. It is my most extensive a cappella work to date, written with my 'heart on my sleeve', challenging to sing but, I believe, gratifying to listen to. Of its five movements, the odd-numbered ones are settings of poems by Lassi Nummi, while the even-numbered ones are vocalises, wordless mood pieces. Each movement has a distinct theme and appearance. Merikuva (Sea Picture) is a serious and epic movement that yields to the whimsical Aamulaulu (Aubade). Aeneas, marmorissa (Aeneas, In Marble) evokes Antiquity, while Chiaroscuro is reminiscent of Renaissance art. The final movement, Venetsia (Venice), summarizes the cycle and pays homage to what is perhaps the most mythical city in Mediterranean.

Välimeri was commissioned for the anniversary festivities of the Candomino Choir, and it is dedicated to the choir and its conductor Tauno Satomaa.

Candomino, Lassi Nummen lyriikka, välimerellinen kulttuuri: kaikki minulle vuosien mittaan merkittäviksi tulleita ilmiöitä. Sinä ovat myös Välimeri-sarjani lähtökohdat ja materiaali. Välimeri on laajin a cappella -sävellykseni, "suurella sydämellä" kirjoitettu, haastavaa laulettavaa mutta uskoakseni kiitollista kuunneltavaa. Sen viidestä osasta parittomat on sävelletty Lassi Nummen teksteihin, parilliset ovat eräänlaisia vokaliiseja, sanattomia tunnelmakuvia. Kullakin osalla on oma, selkeästi profiloituva aiheensa ja ilmeensä. Merikuvan vakavahenkinen eeppisyys taittuu Aamulaulun ilkikurisuuteen. Aeneas, marmorissa vie ajatukset antiikkiin ja Chiaroscuro - valohämy - renessanssin ja miksei uudemmankin ajan maalaustaiteeseen. Viides osa Venetsia on sarjan kokoava päätös ja kunnianosoitus Välimeren kaupungeista ehkä myyttisimmälle. Välimeri on Candominon juhlavuoden tilausteos ja se on omistettu kuorolle ja Tauno Satomaalle.
