Description

When I began composing this work, I tried to make a careful analysis of the features typical of and possible only on the accordion. I was soon fascinated by the instrument's capacity for rapid switches from one register to another, for broad harmonies and for the arabesques exploiting leaps of giant intervals of which the accordion alone is capable.

The name of the work, Suden hetki (The Hour of the Wolf), is probably familiar at least to dream analysts, since it refers to the hours of the night when the vital functions are at their lowest ebb and sleep is most profound; to the time when impulses buried deep in the subconscious are released from the labyrinth of the mind. The subject ties in with my composition (admittedly abstractly) in that both the light, mobile motifs and the slower, lyrical pasages are gradually forced to give way to a repetitive texture repeatedly rising from the depths. After several attempts to assert its presence before merging with the other material, it builds up a mighty climax that undoubtedly makes heavy demands on both the technique and the physical resources of the performers.

Aloittaessani nyt kuultavan teoksen sävellystyötä pyrin kartoittamaan huolellisesti ne mahdollisuudet jotka ovat tyypillisiä ja saavutettavia ainoastaan harmonikalle. Viehätyin pian soittimen kyvyistä nopeisiin rekisterinvaihdoksiin, laajoihin sointuihin ja ainoastaan harmonikalle mahdollisiin suuria intervallihyppäyksiä hyödyntäviin arabeskeihin.

Teoksen nimi Suden hetki lienee tuttu ainakin unitutkijoille; se viittaa niihin yön tunteihin, jolloin ihmisen elintoiminnot ovat vähäisimmillään ja uni syvimmillään; aikaan, jolloin alitajunnasta kumpuavat vaikutteet pääsevät vapaasti nousemaan esiin mielen sokkeloista. Sävellykseen kyseinen aihepiiri liittyy (tosin abstraktisti) sikäli, että teoksen sekä kevyet liikkuvat aiheet että hitaammat lyyriset jaksot joutuvat vähitellen antamaan periksi syvyyksistä toistuvasti nousevalle repetitiiviselle tekstuurille. Pyrittyään usein turhaan esiin ja sulauduttuaan esittäjän tekniikan kuin fyysiset voimavaratkin kovalle koetukselle.
