String Quintet
Description
I composed my String Quintet op. 110 in 2000. It was commissioned by the Kimito Music Festival and premiered in the summer of that year in the little church on one of the idyllic islands in the Gulf of Finland. The quintet is scored for two violins, viola and two cellos. Having two cellos meant I could give the work robustness in the low register. I have, however, made virtually no use of unison or octave figures on the cellos; instead, the instruments for the most part go their own way, contrapuntally, with independent motifs. In other respects, too, the entire quintet is dominated by polyphonic constructions.
The String Quintet is in two movements without a name. The metronome marking for both is 60, but otherwise they differ greatly in character.
The first movement begins on a quiet organ point fifth on the cellos, over which the other instruments weave a polyphonic web in which a minor third occupies the leading role. The texture gradually becomes denser, acquiring greater intensity, and reaches its climax around the middle of the movement. The expectant mood at the end of the movement leads naturally to the much more extensive second movement. Here the music becomes more restless, and the movement contains a wealth of contrasting elements. Finally everything changes, and the polyphony gives way to simple chords that accompany a cantabile motif on the first violin.”

Sävelsin Jousikvintettoni op.110 vuonna 2000. Sen oli tilannut Kimito Musikdagar (Kemiön Musiikkijuhlat) ja kantaesitys tapahtui saman vuoden kesällä Suomenlahden idyllisen saaren pienessä kirkossa. Kvinteton soittimina ovat kaksi viulua, alttoviulu ja kaksi selloa. Kahden sellon käyttö antoi mahdollisuuden luoda tukevuutta matalaan rekisteriin. En ole kuitenkaan juuri lainkaan viljellyt sellojen unisono- tai oktaavikulkuja, vaan suurilta osin soittimet liikkuvat kontrapunktisesti itsenäisin aihein. Muutenkin polyfoniset rakenteet hallitsevat koko kvintettoa.
Jousikvintetossa on kaksi osaa, joilla ei ole nimeä. Molempien osien metronomiluku on 60, mutta luonteeltaan osat ovat kuitenkin hyvin erilaisia.
"Ensimmäinen osa alkaa sellojen äärimmäisen hiljaisella kvinttiurkupisteellä. Sen ylle muut soittimet kutovat moniäänisen verkon, jossa pienellä terssillä on tärkein rooli. Vähitellen kudos tihenee ja intensiteetti kasvaa, huipentuen osan keskivaiheessa. Osan lopun odottava tunnelma vie luontevasti huomattavasti laajempaan toiseen osaan. Tässä musiikki alkaa elää levottomammin, ja osa sisältää runsaasti kontrastoivia elementtejä. Lopussa kaikki muuttuu, polyfonia väistyy yksinkertaisille akordeille, jotka säestävät ensiviulun cantabile-aihetta."
