Sanni und der Wulf

Description

Sanni und der Wolf had its beginnings in a request from Tapio Tuomela for a piece to be included in the Society of Finnish Composers’ concert at the Helsinki Biennale. Shortly after this I found from my shelves a lullaby I had composed three years ago for my new-born daughter Sanni. As one of the basic ideas behind the concert was that the composers should not only play themselves, but work together, I invited Jovanka Trbojevic along on the project, since I have long admired her open-minded approach and the sensitive instincts with which she shapes her works in her own likeness.

We together planned the shape of a piece that would work towards my lullaby, which would then be played as such on one piano at the close. After this original design-work, we each composed our own sections of the piece, and then went over them together. Practically all the harmonic, melodic and rhythmic material is drawn from the first 26 bars of the lullaby. Ideas also came in from sketches Jovanka had made for an early piano composition, including drum-like prepared strings on both pianos, a feature that runs through the entire work.

As for the name — Sanni und der Wolf — well, there is no conscious link with the Prokofiev’s work, although the German edition of Peter and the Wolf did happen to be on my desk at the time we were completing this work. We simply looked around for a fairy-tale title that would somehow point back to the original idea behind the work.
