The Long Summer's Journey into Evening

Description

A Long Summer’s Journey into Evening was composed during the summer 1979; the piece is written for and dedicated to Eija Orpana-Martin. The text by Olli-Matti Ronimus (from 1958) is fantastic and freely associative. Therefore it tempted me to explore musical symbolic gestures, and therefore my music follows the text quite closely. The form of the piece is largely determined by some verbal resemblances inside the poem itself on the other hand, I have built e.g. an artificia1, musical ellipse between the 2nd and the 3rd movements. © Jouni Kaipainen, 1979 Pitkän kesän poikki iltaan on sävelletty kesällä 1979; se on kirjoitettu ja omistettu laulajatar Eija Orpana-Martinille. Olli-Matti Ronimuksen teksti (vuodeIta 1958) on fantasianomainen ja vapaasti assosioiva. Siksi se houkuttaa musiikillisten symbolieleiden tutkimiseen, ja siksi musiikkini seuraa tekstiä varsin tarkasti. Kappaleen muotoa määräävät pitkälle runon sisäiset muistumat; toisaalta esimerkiksi toisen ja kolmannen osan väliin on rakennettu keinotekoinen musiikillinen ellipsi. © Jouni Kaipainen, 1979
