Jouni Kaipainen’s composition style could be described as a synthesis of Expressionism and Classicism, with colourist elements included. “He refuses to let his imagination be curbed in any way, whether musical or social. He is a Modernist, but the past, too, is present in his works,” writes Antti Häyrynen. Kaipainen wrote music in all major genres, including a remarkable number of concertos for a variety of instruments from cello to sax quartet. He also had a deep and close relationship to text, both as a composer of vocal music and as a colourful writer about music. The titles of his compositions also often have a fascinating literary dimension.
