'north for quartet' is the first performative outcome of my practice based on cardinal directions. The work was commissioned by Music Finland as part of the ongoing Northern Connections -project, and was premiered by Ensemble Temporum in Oslo in 2023.
north takes the experience of presence as its starting point. North and knowledge of the north contributes to a human’s experience of location and awareness of their situation within a larger ecosystem.
Works of music aid in the experience of presence and orientation: where am I now, what do I feel and experience, who am I now? They aid in understanding the world: who am I in relation to other beings and the environment (the home, the nature where and at the expense of which I live). Cardinal directions are also intercontaminated. There is more east in the west, more north going south.
My practice relating to cardinal directions reaches towards an integration of geographical, social and musical elements.
pohjoinen (north) kvartetille on ensimmäinen esityksellinen ulostulo ilmansuuntiin kohdistuvasta praktiikastani säveltäjänä. Teos on Music Finlandin tilaama Northern Connections -hankkeen osana, ja sen kantaesittivät norjalainen Ensemble Temporun Ultima-festivaalilla Oslossa 2023.
pohjoinen ottaa lähtökohdakseen läsnäolon. Pohjoinen ja tieto pohjoisesta osaltaan muodostaa kokemuksen ihmisen sijainnista ja tietoisuudestaan osana laajempaa elinympäristöä.
Musiikkiteokset auttavat läsnäolossa ja orientaatiossa: missä olen nyt, mitä tunnen ja koen, kuka olen nyt? Ne auttavat ymmärtämään maailmaa: kuka olen suhteessa muihin ihmisiin ja elinympäristöön (niin kotiin kuin luontoon, jossa sekä olen ja jonka rinnalla tai kustannuksella asun). Ilmansuunnat ovat myös toistensa kontaminoimia. Lännessä on lisää itää, pohjoiseen mennessä enemmän etelää.
Ilmansuuntapraktiikkani kurottaa kohti tarkoitusta integroida maantieteellisiä, sosiaalisia ja musikaalisia tekijöitä toisiinsa.
