The work was commissioned by Music Finland as part of the ongoing Northern Connections -project, and was premiered by Ensemble Temporum in Oslo in 2023.north takes the experience of presence as its starting point. North and knowledge of the north contributes to a human’s experience of location and awareness of their situation within a larger ecosystem. Works of music aid in the experience of presence and orientation: where am I now, what do I feel and experience, who am I now? They aid in understanding the world: who am I in relation to other beings and the environment (the home, the nature where and at the expense of which I live). Cardinal directions are also intercontaminated. There is more east in the west, more north going south.My practice relating to cardinal directions reaches towards an integration of geographical, social and musical elements.
