Description

The pivotal series of Nordgren’s orchestral music is his collection of a dozen concertos, including one for traditional Japanese instruments and orchestra. The single-movement work HATE-LOVE for cello and strings from 1987 can be seen as a continuation of this line, although it has never actually been dubbed a concerto. The cello is in play practically the whole time; for all that, the part demands of the player more by way of interpretative ability than simple technical expertise or stamina. The harmonic world of the piece extends from late romantic moods and triads all the way to cluster-like formations and momentary flashes of microtonal colouring. This multidimensional quality makes the work an ideal example of the composer’s approach to his art.

Nordgrenin orkesteriteosten keskeisen sarjan muodostaa toistakymmentä konserttoa. Vuonna 1987 valmistunut yksiosainen HATE-LOVE sellolle ja jousille voidaan mieltää tämän sarjan jatkeeksi, vaikkei sitä olekaan nimetty varsinaiseksi konsertoksi. Sello on käytännöllisesti katsoen koko ajan äänessa; sen osuus vaatii esittäjältään kuitenkin enemmän tulkinnallista kuin teknistä suorituskykyä. Teoksen harmoninen maailma ulottuu myöhäisromanttisista tunnoista ja kolmisoinnuista aina klustermaisiin muodostelmiin ja hetkittäisiin mikrotonaalisiin värityksiin asti. Tässä moniulotteisuudessaan teos on mitä tyypillisin säveltäjälleen.
