Jouni Kaipainen
Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra Op. 46
Description
I composed my Oboe Concerto in the spring and summer of 1994. The work had been commissioned by the Crusell Festival of Uusikaupunki, Finland. The concerto is dedicated to (and written in collaboration with) the soloist of its first performance, the Swedish oboist Helén Jahren. The concerto is in three movements: Allegretto; fluente, Adagio; dolente and, Presto; misterioso. As can be seen of the titles of the movements, each one of these movements has a very distinct character, by which they represent different viewpoints to oboe’s world. The solo instrument governs the scenery throughout — even if the instrumentation (at least in the first movement) also calls for secondary soloists: trumpet, marimba.
The stow movement has been written as an ‘in memoriam’ piece for the Norwegian harp player Kjell Axel Lier, who was a good friend of Helén Jahren and who had just died in a car accident, when I for the first time met with Helén.
