Description

Calla is a piece I worked forth and back on between 1998 and 2000 when I studied with Brian Ferneyhough in San Diego, California. It is written in memoriam of my mother who passed away in 1996 due to MS. When writing it I contemplated much those short in memoriam pieces Stravinsky wrote when living in Los Angeles to honour his near friends and colleagues, as well as the chosen ensembles and the pointillistic and canonical techniques he often applied in the pieces in question. In the same breath I wanted to write a dark and sombre, yet colorwise rich, diverse and nearly impressionistical lyrical piece.
