Description

Ark, which was finished in February of this year, is the first piece that I have written for the Oulu Symphony Orchestra as its composer-in-residence. Ark is the largest piece that I have written solely for an orchestra. True to myself, I indeed work only with a few, but clearly distinguishable ideas, varying them as much as possible. The piece is uninterrupted but is best perceived in three parts. It begins with an introduction of a swift motif moving in small intervals. These intervals are later used to create the finale. Another essential motif in the beginning is the slow and singing theme that later rules the middle part of the work.

Kuluvan vuoden helmikuussa valmistunut Ark on ensimmäinen Oulun kaupunginorkesterille sen nimikkosäveltäjänä kirjoittamani teos. Ark on laajin pelkästään orkesterille säveltämistäni teoksista. Itselleni uskollisena olen tälläkin kertaa työskennellyt muutaman selkeästi profiloituvan idean parissa, niitä kuitenkin mahdollisimman rikkasti varioiden. Yhtäjaksoisesti soitettava, mutta kaiketi luontevimmin kolmiosaiseksi hahmottuva teos alkaa nopean, pienin intervallein etenevän aiheen esittelyllä. Siitä rakennetaan myöhemmin teoksen finaali. Toinen alkupuolella esiteltävä keskeinen aihe, hidas ja laulava teema, hallitsee puolestaan teoksen keskimmäistä jaksoa.
