Almost exactly fourteen years ago, while attending the Darmstadt Summer Course for New Music, I visited the Paul Klee exhibition at the Schirn Museum in Frankfurt, the theme of which was the eccentric, animated relationship between the master (1879-1940) and music. Included in the exhibition was the Eidola/weiland series of Klee’s late period, a collection of pastels depicting musicians at work: a pianist, harpist, timpanist, buffosinger... My own Eidola, inspired by Klee and Christoph Jäggin (who commissioned and premiered the work), is a purely musical supplement to this set of pictures. Eidola - weiland Gitarrespieler is, in its own restrained way, a virtuosic work, not extrovert in the typical sense but inward-looking, to the very core of the mind and the instrument. The extensive use of brittle, highly sensitive flageolet notes leads the listener to the brink of silence. Eidola - weiland Gitarrespieler on omalla hillityllä tavallaan virtuoosinen teos, ei tyypilliseen tapaan ulos-, vaan sisäänpäin suuntautunut - mielen ja soittimen ytimeen. Hauraiden, herkästi haavoittuvien huiluäänten runsas käyttö johdattaa hiljaisuuden äärelle. Se on myös muistutus siitä, että kitara on perusluonteeltaan mietiskelevä instrumentti.© Harri Suilamo, 3/2000Hace varios años, en oportunidad de mi participación en los Cursos Internacionales de Verano de Darmstadt, visité en Frankfurt una exposición con obras de Paul Klee, fallecido en 1940. El tema de la exposición era la relación vital y original de Klee con la música. Una parte de la misma estaba dedicada a la serie de dibujos a lápiz realizada poco antes de su muerte y titulada "dibujos Eidola/weiland", una serie de trabajos en tiza negra sobre papel borrador, que representan a diversos musicós en su trabajo: al pianista, arpista, timbalista, cantante buffo... Mi Eidola, inspirada por Klee y Christoph Jäggin es una ampliación puramente musical del magistral ciclo de Klee, en el que no pude encontrar ningún guitarrista. Eidola es, a pesar de su contenida y tranquila manera de ser, una obra virtuosa, que se dirige hacia fuera, sino hacia adentro, hacia el núcleo cerrado del sentido humano y de la guitarra.
