This work, composed during the spring 1979, calls on random processes. The idea of an 'open work' has exercised a marked influence, particularly Boulez's Third Sonata. The piece contains thirteen sections, some of which are simply inventories of materials and rules for their combinations. The most defined sections have a fixed formal structure, even if the detailed expression is left up to the performers. At the first performance, Lindberg wrote in the programme that the overall structure is similar of that of a play: different levels of events, 'roles', with different characteristics and developments. Play I, which is not a title of a series, was first performed at the annual Nordic music festival, Nordiska musikdagar, organised in Helsinki in 1980.
