Although the sonnets of William Shakespeare have to do with love, they touch upon many different things in life from the vanishing nature of beauty and justice to self-doubt and longing for death. The sonnets are often sombre and pessimistic, and the brief brighter moments prove to be elusive dreams in the face of an all-embracing night.The social criticism of the four sonnets selected for this work may not be apparent to a reader in this century, but the emotional content is timeless, brilliantly reflecting Man's relationship to the world, desperate and rich in turn. The mood of the singer and the viol shift from disappointment and resignation to joy and defiance, although the final signpost points away, towards sleep.© Harri Vuori, 2000(Musica nova Helsinki)translated by © Jaakko Mäntyjärvi and © Susan SinisaloVaikka William Shakespearen sonetit liittyvät aihepiiriltään rakkauteen, niiden sisältö sivuaa varsin monia elämän osa-alueita kauneuden ja oikeudenmukaisuuden katoavuudesta aina runoilijan oman itseensä kohdistamaan epäilykseen ja kuoleman kaipaukseen. Sonettien ilmaisu kääntyy usein tumman pessimistiseksi ja niiden vähäisetkin valoisat tuokiot osoittautuvat ohikiitäviksi haaveiksi kaikkialle levittäytyvän yön tehdessä tuloaan.Tähän sävellykseen valittujen neljän sonetin yhteiskuntaa kritisoiva puoli saattaa jäädä tämän vuosisadan lukijalle vieraaksi, mutta niiden tunne on ajaton ja kuvastaa taiturillisesti ihmisen sekä epätoivoista että joskus täyteläistäkin suhdetta maailmaansa.
