"I see music as a force of nature", Outi has said, "that can flood over a person and even change entire destinies."</p><p "="">As a composer, Outi Tarkiainen has background both in the Modernist camp and in the jazz camp. Several of her works exhibit, in a deeply instinctive way, an organic, innovative dialogue between these two traditions – an example being the title work of her acclaimed disc <i "=""><a href="https://core.musicfinland.fi/works/into-the-woodland-silence" target="_blank">Into the Woodland Silence</a></i>. </p><p "="">Tarkiainen’s music is frequently performed abroad and has been dubbed to draw on the immensity of the northern natural environment. Her saxophone concerto <a href="https://core.musicfinland.fi/works/saivo" target="_blank">Saivo</a> was nominated for the 2018 Nordic Council Music Prize. <a href="https://core.musicfinland.fi/works/midnight-sun-variations" target="_blank">Midnight Sun Variations</a>, commissioned by the BBC Philharmonic and the National Arts Centre Orchestra from Canada<span class="redactor-invisible-space">, was premiered at the BBC Proms Festival in August 2019 and has since been performed around the world. </span></p>
