Matthew Whittall found his way from Canada to Finland in search of musical freedom and nature. In his music he attempts to fuse various influences – for example Old and New World, Western and non-Western, sacred and secular – into a single, variegated expressive language, and uses extramusical imagery ranging from natural phenomena to poetry and landscape art.

“Accessible without being banal” was the verdict when receiving the Finnish Teosto Prize in 2013 for his work Dulcissima clara sonans.
