Ari Romppanen is a Finnish composer of contemporary art music, who draws influences for his artistic work from various sources, such as space, virtuosity, or Japanese culture, from which he combines his own characteristic musical language. His output consists mainly of chamber music and works for solo instruments.

Romppanen has written several works for notable musicians like Emil Holmström, Arto Satukangas, Kai Nieminen, Sari Blå, Janne Mertanen, Erkki Palola, and for Eriko Takahashi, with whom he has co-operated frequently since 2018. He has also received many commissions all the way from Japan. Besides being interested in different formal constructions, in several works he has also used improvisation, and some of his piano works have been awarded in different composition competitions. In 2006 he worked in Buenos Aires with local improvisation group as invited by a local university and Finnish Embassy in Buenos Aires.

Together with professor Seppo Kimanen and Dr. Lasse Lehtonen, Ari Romppanen is a founder and music coordinator of the music section of the Finnish Japanese Society, FinJa Music, which aims to promote musical co-operation and exchange between Finland and Japan, to make Japanese music better known in Finland, and to maintain a relationship with its partner society in Tokyo, the Japan Finland Contemporary Music Society. In addition, Romppanen has collaborated with Kunstverein Alte Schmiede, maintained by the City of Vienna, by co-planning a Finnish-Japanese-Austrian chamber music program which was performed in Vienna. Furthermore, Ari Romppanen has participated in some collaborative projects combining theater, dance, contemporary circus and music. A few of the dramaturgical ideas derived from these projects have also influenced his other works.

Artistic work done by Ari Romppanen has been supported for example by Arts Promotion Centre Finland, Pro Musica Foundation and The Finnish Music Foundation. Besides composing, Romppanen has taught both piano and composing, and he has performed as a pianist himself. Further, he has held several positions of responsibility, like in the board of Sibelius Fund of the Society of Finnish Composers, also as its vice president.
