Description

My Violin Concerto starts from nothing, condenses into melody, sings, dances and eventually ends with a question mark. The violin is, of course, the principal character of the drama, but its role in relation to the orchestra alters all the time. Now and then it is joined by other solo violins, creating a bridge between soloist and orchestra. In a few places, the solo line dissolves into the orchestral texture, and occasionally the orchestra takes on a position at the opposite pole to the soloist. The concerto searches constantly for an equilibrium between the individual and the group.

The ethos of the concerto is directly connected to tradition. It strives to reflect the upsurge of a new and positive tradition-consciousness current in our time. Nowadays we realise that what is important in tradition is not the preservation of things as they are, but the anchoring of inevitable change to the natural and spontaneous evolution of our common listening culture. To me, progress does not mean changing things but undergoing change.

Viulukonserttoni alkaa ryhjästä, tiivistyy melodiaksi, laulaa, tanssii ja päättyy lopulta arvoitukseen. Viulu on luonnollisesti draaman päähenkilö, mutta sen suhde orkesteriin vaihtelee alati. Tuon tuostakin se saa seurakseen muita sooloviuluja, jotka muodostavat sillan solistin ja orkesterin välille. Muutamassa kohdassa solistin linja sulautuu täysin orkesterin kudokseen, joskus orkesteri muodostaa solistille vastapoolin. Konsertto etsii alati tasapainoa yksilön ja ryhmän välillä.

Eetokseltaan viulukonsertto liittyy tiivisti traditioon. Se pyrkii heijastamaan ajallemme leimallista uuden, positiivisen traditiotietoisuuden nousua. Nykyisin tajuamme, ettei traditiossa oleellista ole säilyttäminen, vaan välttämättömän muutoksen ankkuroiminen yhteisen kuuntelukulttuurimme luonnolliseen, pakottomaan evoluutioon. Minulle kehitys ei ole muuttamista, vaan muuttumista.
