Description
Vanishing Point (2013) was commissioned by Risto-Matti Marin to celebrate the 200th birthday of Wagner. The starting point for the work is a short piano piece by Wagner called Ankunft bei den schwarzen Schwänen – Albumblatt in As-Dur für Klavier (WWV 95). The original intention was to write new music taking the overall sound of the Wagner piece as a sonic model. Once the composing started, Wagner's model began to vanish further and further into the horizon. The only thing left from the original model was just one pitch: A point in the horizon. This point can be recognized from a dotted rhythm gesture. The model is too far to be recognized by the naked eye, but the gaze stayes firmly focused on this vanishing point. The vanishing point is a term from visual arts, representing a way of drawing perspective in a way that all the lines in a painting point towards one point. The music draws different kinds of acoustic shapes on the fore-, middle- and background. Although the work is quite short, I tried to find in the music a kind of vanishing point, where the listener could for a glimpse see the kind of vast landscape of long durations typical of Wagner's music and for a moment stop in time.

Vanishing Point (2013) on Risto-Matti Marinin tilaama pianoteos, joka juhlistaa Wagner juhlavuotta. Teoksen lähtökohtana ja inspiraation lähteenä on Wagnerin pienimuotoinen pianoteos Ankunft bei den schwarzen Schwänen – Albumblatt in As-Dur für Klavier (WWV 95). Vanishing Pointin alkuperäinen tarkoitus oli käyttää Wagnerin pianokappaletta soinnillisena mallina uudelle musiikille. Sävellystyön lähdettyä käyntiin Wagnerin teos siirtyi kuitenkin kauemmaksi ja kauemmaksi horisonttiin, ja alkuperäisestä mallista jäi jäljelle ainoastaan yksi yksittäinen sävel: piste horisontissa. Tämän sävelen tunnistaa pisteellisestä rytmiaiheesta. Alkuperäinen hahmo on liian kaukana tunnistettavaksi enää silmällä, mutta katseen suunta pysyy tiukasti tässä pakopisteessä. Vanishing Point (pakopiste) tarkoittaa terminä kuvataiteessa perspektiivin piirtämisen tapaa, jossa kaikki linjat piirretään kohti taulussa olevaa yhtä pistettä. Musiikki piirtää erilaisia etu-, keski- ja taka-alalla sekä olevia akustisia hahmoja. Vaikka tämä teos onkin pienimuotoinen, yritin etsiä musiikissa sellaista katoamispistettä, jossa voi hetkellisesti nähdä välähdyksen Wagnerin musiikille tyypillisestä suurten aikajänteiden laajasta maisemasta ja pysähtyä aikaan hetkeksi.
