Description

The composition of this piece was dominated by images of something clear, unbounded and cold, of the loneliness of great distances. Other important impetuses were the timbre and instrumental potential of the ensemble: the situations in which the three instruments find themselves keep interlocking to form little solos and duos, and the overall impression is of a fast-moving dialogue.

I also liked the idea of time having only one direction, and of an almost-symmetrical overall form. The first time it occurs the motif is new, but when repeated, it may be similar but no longer quite the same. A slow middle section finally leads to a return to the beginning, but the events now stand in a different relationship with one another in terms of duration and weight.

Teoksen sävellystyötä hallitsivat mielikuvat jostakin kirkkaasta, avarasta ja kylmästä, suurten etäisyyksien yksinäisyydestä. Tärkeitä lähtökohtia olivat myös yhtyeen soinnilliset ja soittimelliset mahdollisuudet: kolmen soittimen tilanteet lomittuvat tavan takaa lyhyisiin sooloihin ja duoihin, ja kokonaisuus hahmottuu nopealiikkeiseksi dialogiksi.

Minua viehätti myös ajatus ajan yksisuuntaisuudesta ja melkein-symmetrisestä kokonaismuodosta. Ensimmäistä kertaa esiintyessään asia on uusi, kertautuessaan se voi olla samankaltainen, mutta ei enää "sama". Hitaan keskivaiheen jälkeen palataan lopulta alkuun, mutta tapahtumien keskinäiset kesto- ja painokkuussuhteet ovat muuttuneet.
