Tre stycken
by Magnus Lindberg
Three pieces
till Esa-Pekka Salonen
Description
Tre stycken (Three pieces) is a serial work, written during the Autumn of 1976 and offered as a Christmas present to Esa-Pekka Salonen, a student friend who at that time played the horn. The piece is divided into three movements. The first is extremely complicated; the second brings to mind puppets or broken machines, and brings the piece to a climax; the third is a slow movement for string trio with long, unbroken notes, followed by a virtuoso cadenza for the horn: theoretical music by a young composer with an interest in Milton Babbitt, particularly his Music for Four Synthesizers. The piece was the first of Lindberg's works to be performed in public, in a concert organized by the association 'Korvat auki' (Ears Open), which Lindberg and other young composers from the Sibelius Academy had set up to promote new music.
