Toccata
for two toy pianos and one performer
Description
The purpose of “Toccata” was to create a virtuoso piece for an instrument that has very limited sonic capabilities and that is still sometimes regarded just as a toy. In this work there are two opposite aesthetic poles: on the one hand there is the essence of a “toy”, yet on the other hand “Toccata” is an utterly dark and dramatic piece that circles in its own never-ending spheres, which gives this composition a rather disturbing and dualistic character. The motivic material of the piece consists of rhythmical repetitions onto which short melodic fragments are being reflected. I have attempted to amend the instrument's technical potential by dividing the musical material between two toy pianos.
