Three Canons

Music Finland

Description

Three Canons was composed between April 2023 - March 2024. The work was not continuous, but it was a project I would come back to every now and then in between other projects. I had been wanting to write a set of canons for some time, and when Sebastian Brenner of Ensemble Tyyni asked me for a duet for their spring 2024 concert, I decided to start composing these pieces. The result is a collection of three canons. Each of them utilize a different canonic technique, which I will briefly describe below:

Canon I - Inversion canon where the voices begin a major 10th apart. It follows a loose ABA-type of structure. I had an idea of building a slightly longer and extensive piece with multiple different characteristics.

Canon II - Retrograde canon. The clarinet and bassoon both play the same melody in same register but starting from opposite ends of the melody.

Canon III - Canon per diminutionem. The clarinet plays the melody of the bassoon a tritone higher with note values reduced by 50%. The piece is a canon until measure 25, where a small codetta remiscing music heard in measure 9 begins.
