Description

The Pärnu Codex is written for male / low voices (vocal group or choir) but can also be performed by female / high voices or mixed ensembles. The doubling synthesizer part should be used in rehearsals, and while a cappella performances are welcome, it can also be played in concerts. However, synthesizer accompaniment is obligatory for L'homme armé, and it is recommended for concert performances of Study in Pajara and Porcupine Progression.

The first ten songs of The Pärnu Codex were originally written in 2021-2022 for Gradus ad Parnassum, a biweekly online microtonal solfège meeting organized by Estonian composers Andrus Kallastu, Gerhard Lock and Hans-Gunter Lock. Many of the songs were sung in concerts at the Pärnu Contemporary Music Days 2022 and 2023. L´homme armé was written for the latter event.

Individual movements of The Pärnu Codex can be selected for a concert in any order. If the whole suite is performed, the above order is recommended.
