Description

On 18th August 2020 was presented a world premiere performance in the Espoo Cathedral of my arrangement for flute, violoncello, organ and vocal ensemble of the Lutheran Hymn (Choral) [No. 560 on the Finnish Hymnal]: Lands, forests are silent. The arrangement was based on the version of the hymn prepared by J.S. Bach and was a great success. Inspired by the evening, and beautiful playing of the flutist Senja Mäki and cellist Auroora Perttunen there, I began writing the Suite the following month. The composing process lasted a bit over four months, started on 25th September 2020 and finished on 30th January 2021.

A neoclassical three-movement work is taking advantage of the resonance of both instruments, benefiting registers on opposite positions and timbres. The opening movement in C major, Allegro energico, is written in ternary form, following the structure of Da capo aria of the Baroque era operas and oratorios. Mendelssohnian lightness is present, especially in the section B. The following movement, Andante cantando – Allegro, has an extended sonata form; the section B (in F minor) has been transposed to A-flat major in the recapitulation section, whereas the repeating A section (in D-flat major) has an shortened distorted dissonant throwback in the middle of these B sections. Influences from the Finnish folk music are audible. The closing movement, Vivace molto, is in sonata form, bringing the work to its rousing and joyful end.

The world premiere performance took place on 25th November 2022 at the Haihara Art Centre, Tampere, Finland, performed by flutist Lotta Rissanen and cellist Taina Raittila.
