Description
Jousikvartetto nro 2 valmistui aivan Sibelius-viikkojen kynnyksellä. Sen taustalla oli ajatus, ettei jokainen uusi sävellys tähtää samaan asemaan kuin Beethovenin yhdeksäs sinfonia; kaikkea taidetta ei kannata ottaa haudanvakavasti. Yksi vakava piirre teoksessa toivottavasti kuitenkin on, eli ristiriita kevyen ja ilmavan, suorastaan viihteellisen musiikin ja modernin taidemusiikin idiomin välillä. Teos on kunnianosoitus bossa nova -kuningas Antônio Carlos Jobimille sekä empatianilmaus Rion katulapsille ja kaikille 'Ipaneman pojille'.
