Staccato Conversations

by Ulf Långbacka

for flute, clarinet and cello

Description

The interplay between instruments in music closely resembles human exchanges of meaning. As social media has become so dominant in our conversations, it has become more difficult to engage in meaningful dialogue: we don’t listen, we talk over one another, and we retreat into bubbles where our own opinions are reinforced and inflated.

The piece Staccato Conversations is inspired by the structure of conversations and exchanges of meaning, as well as by the instrumental characters of the three instruments—especially short, abrupt staccato sounds, like human voices or the thoughts in the intense exchanges of Twitter feeds. The instruments take turns in rhythmic hocket structures, stumble over one another in irritable polyrhythms, and interact in different polyphonic roles—theme, secondary theme, and accompaniment.
