Square root of 2 in D flat Major

by Timo Tuhkanen

a race for any wind duet

Description

Liner notes: This piece is a statement.

1) each player plays their part as fast as possible; trying constantly to push past the limits of their subjective physical properties. There are seven (7) repetitions, or multiples there of, once the chosen notes is played by a musician the contest is over. With each repetition each of the above marked notes is modulated a semitone, e.g. D flat becomes D natural, on the first repeat, and stays that way, either till the end, or till the next repetition in which it must be modulated.

2) any note can be held for an indefinite amount of time, but, a player can only continue playing (the series of notes) once that same pitch is played by their opponent. (this enables stalemate situations) but continuing once the same pitch is played is not compulsory, and the player must use their own judgement.

3) The third, and most complex rule, is that once a note is modulated, it must switch with any rest. This should not be planned.
