Description
"A Big Lever", which I composed in 1988 for rock-jazz ensemble, includes a part dedicated to Frank Zappa, titled "Hats Off". It is free atonal, it’s in unisono and has wild and acrobatic rhythms.
When I started composing "Spiral" I picked up few motivs from "Hats Off" and worked out a tone row. Title "Spiral" came from a whirlwind-like gesture, which opens this music and has an important role also later on. The acrobatic rhythms of "Hats Off" changed into semi-drunken and sarcastic whims, in which manner "Spiral" rounds a circle, entering time after time into the starting point.
