Sonatina per pianoforte
by Jyrki Linjama
Description
The Sonatina for piano was written in 1995 for Jyrki Lähteenmäki. During the past several years I have worked as a lecturer in music history at the University of Turku, and this work has deepened my interest in older forms and techniques of composition, far more than did my study at the Sibelius Academy during the 80's, when I was studying composition with Einojuhani Rautavaara and counterpoint with Paavo Heininen. This piece is my first application of sonata form (in itself a most complex concept), but it is not a sonata form based on tonality or themes: rather the textures, harmonic color, rhythmic taleas and cantus firmus -techiques are more important (the cantus firmus in the exposition and recapitulation is a medieval melody. The subject BACH serves as the cantus firmus in the development and in the coda). But I am not entirely sure whether this piece has the most appropriate name: it is first of all lyrical, poem-like, dream-like.
