Sonata Lyrical

by Luukas Hiltunen

Viola Sonata

Description

The three-movement, ca. 21-minute Sonata for Viola and Piano, subtitled "Lyrical" (2026), was commissioned by violist Harri Sippel. In the work, which was composed in nearly a month between June 26 – July 25, 2026, the rich tone of the viola is utilised extensively and effectively through a long-lined musical narrative. The instruments are on equal ground throughout the piece — from the very first measures, a conversational and intense relationship is established. In the Sonata, silence, too, is music. Unlike most of my other compositions to date, the Viola Sonata has no outer-musical source of inspiration.
