Sinfonisia luonnoksia
by Joonas Kokkonen
Symphonic Sketches
Description
The Symphonic Sketches form a round and balanced entity but did not, however, in the composer’s opinion satisfy the criteria for a symphony proper. “This work was in fact born out of three different ideas, each of which could, with luck, have developed into a symphony,” he once said. The break with the symphonic tradition is also underlined by the loosely descriptive titles of the three movements. The central Pezzo giocoso is one of Kokkonen’s most spirited fast movements. The title Religioso of the last movement could be applied to many of his other slow movements.

Teoksen keskellä oleva Pezzo giocoso on yksi Kokkosen vauhdikkaimmista nopeista osista. Vakavahenkisen päätösosan otsikko Religioso puolestaan sopisi monelle muullekin Kokkosen hitaalle osalle.
