Description

The Kantele Septet (1987) for concert kantele, harpsichord, flute and string quartet was written to a commission from the Finnish Kantele Association. The work opens with thin muted notes on the kantele and gradually evolves into afield involving the entire compass of all the instruments in the ensemble. The crystal-clear stream ofthe kantele andthe harpsichord scintillates underneath the mist of the string flageolets and the flute. The colourful texture seems to move and to stand still at the same time; for a moment, the Minimalist repetition dispels the sense of time as we know it. The mood and structure of the work is based on the ancient Greek mode C-Db-F-Gb-Ab-Bb.

Kanteleseptetto (1987) konserttikanteleelle, cembalolle, huilulle ja jousikvartetille syntyi Kanteleliitto ny:n tilauksesta 1987. Teos alkaa kanteleen ohuin sammutetun sävelin, ja tihenee vähitellen soittimiston koko alueen käsittäväksi sointikentäksi. Jousten, flageolettien ja huilun utuisten ääriviivojen alla helisee kanteleen ja cembalon kirkas virta. Värikäs kudos tuntuu sekä etenevän että jäävän paikallaan; minimalistinen toistoisuus hävittää hetkeksi kellon aikaan sidotun ajantajun. Teoksen tunnelman ja rakenteen pohjana on antiikin kreikkalainen asteikko c-des-f-ges-as-b.
