saari, rannaton

an island, shoreless for bass clarinet and tape, island, shoreless, an island, shoreless
bassoklarinetille ja ääninauhalle
Description
A collage made up of a live performer and tape versus a tape of a bass clarinet and the sounds of wood, sand, metal, glass, etc. Above all I was attracted by soft, lingering sounds the beauty of which is only apparent when they are given sufficient time and space. The music for the most part proceeds as a slow stream, its course marked off and guided by faster outbursts.
The tape is a landscape in which the player roams - hence the name. At times the bass clarinet merges with the background, while at others it is a clear soloist, as in the improvised solo cadenza towards the end. The title can also be thought of as describing the composition as a little island in a boundless sea of sound.
The exploration of the island could continue; the traveller seems to be left with sand between his toes.
