Description
The ensemble of the work "On the Island", with the exception of the electronics in use, was determined in advance. Since the acoustic instruments are intensely characteristic and colorful in themselves, I did not want to touch their sound electronically, but ended up using a background sound tape recorded at our summer cottage. In addition, the first part uses a loop pedal with the guitar to create a long layered guitar ostinato.
The first part of "Firewood" is built on top of the ostinato and the audio tape given by the composer, and in the performance situation, from short motives chosen from a given collection by the musicians. There are sounds of chopping firewoods on the tape, and the musicians take impulses from them for their own playing. This could be said to be at least partly guided improvisation.
The second part “Air solitude” is built on the melodicism that is always important to me in music. The background tape emits the restful noise of the fireplace, and the music is born in the center of the silence of nature, containing aspects of both peace and restlessness.
The work was created mainly at our summer cottage in Kalliosaari, Pielavesi, where I hadn’t ever composed before. The experience was new: the environment influenced my musical ideas and thinking, at least in my opinion, in a positive way by reducing my ideas. I hope that the listener catches up with the atmosphere of the nature that surrounded me and that he/she stops for a moment while listening this music.

Teoksen ”Saaressa” kokoonpano käytössä olevaa elektroniikkaa lukuun ottamatta oli määritelty etukäteen. Koska kyseiset akustiset instrumentit ovat itsessään voimakkaan karakteristisia ja värikkäitä, en halunnut koskea niiden sointiin sähköisesti, vaan päädyin kesämökillä äänitetyn taustanauhan käyttämiseen. Lisäksi ensimmäisessä osassa käytetään kitaralla luupperipedaalia, jonka avulla saadaan aikaiseksi pitkä kerroksellinen kitaran ostinato.
Ensimmäinen osa ”Pilkkeet” rakentuu ostinaton ja ääninauhan päälle säveltäjän antamista, mutta esitystilanteessa muusikkojen niistä valitsemista lyhyistä motiiveista. Ääninauhalla on pilkkeitten hakkaamisen ääniä, ja muusikot ottavat niistä impulsseja omaan soittoonsa. Osan voisi sanoa olevan ainakin osittain ohjattua improvisaatiota.
Toinen osa ”Aria Solitudine” (aaria / laulu yksinäisyydessä) rakentuu minulle musiikissa aina tärkeän melodisuuden varaan. Taustanauhalta kuuluu takkatulen levollista kohinaa, ja musiikki on syntynyt luonnon hiljaisuuden keskellä sisältäen sekä rauhan että levottomuuden aspekteja.
Teos on syntynyt pääosin kesämökillämme Pielaveden Kalliosaaressa, jossa en ole säveltänyt koskaan aiemmin. Kokemus oli uusi: ympäristö vaikutti musiikillisiin ideoihini ja ajatteluuni ainakin omasta mielestäni positiivisella tavalla pelkistämällä ideoitani. Toivon, että kuulija saa kiinni minua ympäröineen luonnon tunnelmista ja pysähtyy hetkeksi musiikin äärellä.
