The poem beginneth

Description

The basic (and only) idea of this piece is combining text from the Kalevala with Medieval polyphony. This could be justified for example by theorizing what might have happened if Finland had had access to Western art music at the time of the Notre Dame school in the late Middle Ages ù after all, French composers at that time wrote polyphonic motets to secular vernacular texts.Connoisseurs of Medieval music will no doubt note that the music sounds almost,but not quite, like Machaut.

I wrote this work as a wedding present for Minna Aarnio and Sven Hult in summer 1996, and it was premiered at the wedding by the Clic vocal ensemble. The bride and groom smiled bravely.

Teoksen perusidea (ja ainoa idea) on Kalevalan tekstin yhdistäminen keskiaikaiseen moniäänisyyteen. Tätä voisi perustella vaikka ajatusleikillä siitä, miten olisi voinut käydä jos Suomessa olisi ollut länsimaista taidemusiikkia jo Notre Damen koulukunnan aikaan myöhäiskeskiajalla - tehtiinhän Ranskassakin moniäänisiä motetteja kansanomaisiin maallisiin teksteihin noihin aikoihin. Keskiajan musiikin tuntijat havaitsevat varmaankin, että teos kuulostaa melkein Machaut’lta, mutta ei aivan.

Kirjoitin teoksen häälahjaksi Minna Aarniolle ja Sven Hultille kesällä 1996, ja lauluyhtye Clic kantaesitti sen hääjuhlassa. Hääpari ainakin pyrki hymyilemään iloisesti.
