Pulsari

Pulsar

for wind band

Description

My work Pulsar, composed for wind orchestra, was inspired by the astronomical phenomenon known as a pulsar. The work consists of four interconnected sections—Dream, Clearing Out, Supernova, and Aftermath—which depict a massive star as it reaches a supernova explosion, leaving behind only a neutron star, a pulsar, composed primarily of neutrons and other subatomic particles.

Pulsar was my first experiment with aleatoric notation, allowing the work to take on a freer form. The role of the conductor and section leaders takes on a new significance, as in the partly dreamlike opening section, Dream, they are able to explore a world without bar lines. At the same time, the purpose of the section is to encourage the musicians to listen more attentively and become more aware of their surroundings, while also following the conductor and working more closely with their section.
