Description

The Piano Sonata Op. 32a is the first and most extended of the four works grouped together under the heading of op. 32, the others being the String Quartet Op. 32c and the two collections of short piano pieces. Although all these works share the same musical material and, to a certain extent, similar thought-processes, the whole opus is so rich in contrasts that the family relationships are not as immediately apparent as the diversity of invention that springs from one basic network of ideas.

The cental idea of the first movement of my sonata is the contrast between long, sustained notes and stabbing or darting music: often also between the strong and the soft or between the dark and bright registers. But the intimate recitative-like music which recedes into the background as the movement progresses contains perhaps the most highly-charged material of the whole opus.

The second movement opens with a rising ninth which is articulated rhythmically as a keen edged iamb. This maps out the colouristic possibilities of the movement at the very start. The first melodies are derived frorn other intervals, as are the bell sounds. But at the midpoint it is the iambic ninth that has a decisive influence on the melodic development: the motive generates not so much a continuation as a beginning tor itself like a domino, on which every edge begins with a ninth, falling backwards.

At the midpoint of the third movement there are canonic imitations in contrary motion, surrounded by other two-part linear material. This finally concentrates the motivic course of events, sometimes in three layers. These features of contrapuntal compositional form, seen as if through a multi-faceted prism, interlock with the sound world of the first movement which is now represented by the juxtaposition of long series of repetitions and rapid, darting music. This sort of ‘surrealistic counterpoint’ is reminiscent to some extent of the finale of my organ triptych, Oculus aquilae.

Pianosonaatti op. 32a on ensimmäinen ja laajin neljästä op. 32:een kuuluvasta teoksesta. Muut ovat jousikvartetto op. 32c sekä kaksi lyhyistä pianokappaleista koostuvaa sarjaa. Vaikka kaikki teokset käyttävät samoja musiikillisia perusaineksia, tämä opus kokonaisuudessaan on kuitenkin niin täynnä kontrasteja, että sen keskinäiset suhteet eivät ole yhtä helposti havaittavissa kuin saman käsiteverkoston käytöstä johtuva luovuuden ja kekseliäisyyden moninaisuus.

Sonaattini ensiosan ajatusmaailman keskuksena on pitkän, suoran sostenuto-soinnin ja terävän, piste- tai ryöppymäisen impulssin vastakohtaisuus. Tähän liittyy usein voimakkaan ja pehmeän, usein myös tumman ja kirkkaan rekisterin vastakohtaisuus. Mutta tapahtumien edetessä väistyvään asemaan jäävä intiimin resitatiivin kaltainen musiikki sisältää koko opuksen kenties latautuneimmat äänenpainot.

Toinen osa aikaa nousevalla noonilla teräväksi jambiksi rytmitettynä. Se kartoittaa aluksi osan värimahdollisuuksia: ensimmäiset melodiat kasvavat muista intervalleista, samoin kellonsoitot. Mutta osan keskellä juuri jambi-nooni-aihe ohjaa ratkaisevaa melodista prosessia: säe kasvattaa itselleen ei jatkoa, vaan alkua takaperin etenevänä dominona, jossa joka nivel alkaa noonilla.

Kolmannen osan keskellä on kanonisia imitaatioita vastaliikkeessä, sen ympärillä muutakin kaksiäänistä lineaarista tekstiä, joka lopulta tiivistää motiivisen tapahtumisen osittain kolmikerroksiseksi. Nämä ikään kuin monitahoisen prisman läpi nähdyt kontrapunktisen sävellysmuodon piirteet lomittuvat ensiosan soitinmaailmaan, jota nyt edustaa pitkien repetitiosarjojen ja nopeiden ryöppyjen vastakkainasettelu. Tällainen ‘surrealistinen kontrapunkti’ muistuttaa jossain määrin Oculus aquilae -urkutriptyykin finaalia.
