Pikkuväki

by Tomi Räisänen

recorder solo & tape

Description

Many ancient Finnish words had a very different meaning from today. One is "väki," meaning the power associated with natural places, elements and the environment, used by elves and other supernatural beings. I believe Jean Sibelius's symphonic poem 'Tapiola' (1926) is related to "väki". I have been fascinated by the glissando-like sound effect in his piece, realised by the fast grace notes of the French horns. I decided to take this single effect - reminiscent of the roar of a mythical predator - as the starting point for my work. TR, 2013
