Picture – Play

for violoncello

Description

My piece for solo cello from 2016 explores musical form through suddenness and nonlinearity. At the time I was writing the piece, I felt a need to develop my musical thinking further away from directionality or linearity. Therefore, in this short piece I used materials from an earlier chamber music work of mine; not as direct quotations, but by re-ordering and recontextualizing the initial materials. The result is a compact form with disjunct gestures that bare only traces of linearity in their internal or external relationships.

The title of the piece, Picture – Play, suggests suddenness – a kind of reactive or momentary approach – in the performance situation too: the performer detects a musical figure (“a picture”), and then reacts to it in the moment.

Albeit a short little piece, this experimenting I did with nonlinearities has later proven crucial for my musical thinking.
