Phonation

by Timo Tuhkanen

for solo voice

Description

Phonation is a piece that uses a graphic system to map out vowels and consonants as shapes of the mouth within a pitch space. This give the possibilities to create a temporal graph that makes it possible to compose for the shape and movement of the mouth in time. While pitch space is indicated on the vertical the result of the constant movement between the shapes of the phonemes is rather a vocal tension rather than a clear pitch and the merging and diverging lines indicate a duality of thought, an in between, of the vocal shape.

The piece is to be performed in a slow tempo.
