Notturno
by Aarre Merikanto
poem for orchestra
runoelma orkesterille
Description
The Notturno is the last of the orchestral pieces written by Aarre Merikanto in his radical period of the 1920s. It does, however, differ in idiom and to some extent style from the sharp-featured Symphonic Study that preceded it. The Notturno is a piece consistent in mood that surges slowly forwards, often in thick, velvety swathes, devoid of any great pinnacles or external drama. The harmony is chromatic, often bitonal. The orchestra has a triple wind section but only four French horns in the brass, and no percussion at all.

Notturno päättää orkesterimusiikissa Aarre Merikannon 1920-luvun radikaalin kauden. Harmonia on kromaattista, usein bitonaalista.
