Narrative Topography I
by Lauri Kilpiö
Description
The title refers to the nature of the ideas in the work: as very often in contemporary music, the musical materials used in the piece are essentially not melodies or themes, but rather different gestures, textures or sounding surfaces. The music seems to consist of different topographies or textural situations. But the “topographies” are very often used like themes in traditional music: certain gestures and textural situations are repeated, varied, lengthened, cut or combined with other elements. The topography becomes narrative and acquires musical meaning.
The piece is mostly fast and virtuosic music, but also some slower and more static moments are heard. The work is dedicated to Niko Kumpuvaara, a wonderful accordionist, who has also commissioned and premièred the piece.
