Mysterium pour Grand Orchestre
by Ernest Pingoud
Description
Mysterium represents the religious streak in Pingoud’s broad output. It was inspired by a poem by his brother, Nikolai Pingoud, and has the same name as the large work long planned but never actually composed by Skryabin; and indeed, the influence of Skryabin can be heard. The work is dominated by augmented triads, parallel chords and a slow pace coloured by archaic chorale moods and Skryabin harmonies offset by a culminating allegro section. The orchestration makes the work one of the most soloistic and transparent in all Pingoud.
