Musiikkia jousiorkesterille
by Joonas Kokkonen
Music for String Orchestra
Musiikkia jousille
Description
The Music for Strings was Kokkonen’s breakthrough work in addition to being his first and biggest work for orchestra. It represented the culmination of his early neoclassical period, yet the idiom is already so chromatic that the shift to dodecaphony seemed only natural in the works that followed. In keeping with the motif technique characteristic of him, the music grows out of material presented in the opening bars. With its four movements, the work is almost a symphonic entity at the heart of which is the Adagio religioso rising to a chorale-like triad climax.

Kokkoselle ominaisen motiivitekniikan mukaisesti musiikki kasvaa esiin aivan alkutahdeissa esitellystä materiaalista. Teos muodostaa neljine osineen lähes sinfonisen kokonaisuuden, jonka ytimenä on koraalimaiseen kolmisointuhuipennukseen kasvava Adagio religioso.
