Musica concertante
by Erik Bergman
Jousikvartetto nro 2
String Quartet No. 2
Description
Musica concertante for string quartet has filled my mind for quite some time. It developed in my subconsciousness until it simply bursted into my thoughts one day. I wrote the introductory part immediately and two days later I continued writing with another that was already complete in my mind.
The second part starts with a viola solo that soon transforms into a meditative duo with the rest of the violins. Suddenly the first violin grows into virtuoso soon to be overshadowed by a complex cello element. At last the first violin returns to its virtuoso theme and the part ends with a cello solo. The concerto-like flavour of the second part is continued in the last two parts. In the third part of the viola continues its expressive cantando. Different contrasts and themes alternate in this musical theatre until, in the last part, the violin and the viola commence in a rhythmic ostinato, the culmination of the piece that restores the glowing of the furioso of the introduction.

Osan lopussa ensi viulu palaa virtuoosiseen teemaansa. Osa päättyy sellosooloon.
Toisen osan konserttomaisuus jatkuu kahdessa viimeisessä osassa.
