Description

This work is, quite obviously, a sequel. The idea of writing another set of choral songs to follow my Four Shakespeare Songs (1984) floated around for many years before I actually got down to writing the music. The title is thus much older than any of the music contained herein (I also considered Son of Shakespeare Songs and Revenge of the Shakespeare Songs).

This work has a number of wholly intentional parallels with its predecessor. In terms of harmonic language and texture, it is quite clearly related to Four Shakespeare Songs, although of course my musical style has evolved somewhat over the past 13 years.

Fear no more is a funeral oration, originally for the title character in Cymbeline. It is quite restrained despite the temptingly emotional harmonies, and especially the concluding commendation. No exorciser harm thee is extremely simple and subdued.

Over hill, over dale (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) is one of Shakespeare’s best-known set pieces. It is a speech by a fairy with no specified name, on his/her (?) way to prepare for the arrival of Titania, the fairy queen. This song is a very light and breezy scherzo with quite a lot of Impressionism in it.

Time, a heavy and sonorous setting of one of the more gloomy Shakespeare sonnets, is a depiction of the inevitability of time and as such owes something to Saturn in The Planets by Holst. It is the longest and heaviest movement in this cycle.

Who is Silvia? (Two Gentlemen of Verona) is a double fugue complete with inversions, augmentations and stretta; this description is not terribly helpful, though. The overall impression is that of a bright and cheerful crowd of people chattering away (as in a marketplace, for instance), with a few key phrases emerging from the texture every now and again.

A scurvy tune (The Tempest) is almost an afterthought, a scurrilous sailor song that, while being robust and risqué, manages to demonstrate the essential similarity of the traditional Hornpipe and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no. 3. And, of course, it makes a nice encore.

More Shakespeare Songs is dedicated to the Folio Society, London, a book club that I have been a member of since 1991, on the occasion of the Society’s 50th anniversary in 1997.

Harmonian ja tekstuurin puolesta teoksen sukulaisuus Four Shakespeare Songs -teokseen on hyvin selvä, vaikka tottahan tavassani kirjoittaa musiikkia on kuluneiden 13 vuoden aikana jotain kehitystä tapahtunut.

Fear No More (Älä enää pelkää) on hautajaispuhe, alunperin Cymbeline-näytelmän nimihenkilölle. Se on vähäeleinen, vaikka se harmonioidensa puolesta houkuttelisikin hyvin emotionaaliseen tulkintaan. Erityisesti päätöstaite No exorciser harm thee (‘Älköön manaaja sinua vahingoittako’) on hyvin yksinkertainen ja hillitty.

Over Hill, Over Dale (Yli mäen, yli laakson) on Shakespearen tunnetuimpia tekstejä. Se on nimeltä mainitsemattoman keijun repliikki näytelmästä Kesäyön unelma; hän on matkalla valmistelemaan keijujen kuningattaren Titanian saapumista. Osa on kevyt ja ilmava scherzo, jossa on impressionistisia piirteitä.

Time (Aika) on painokas ja sointirikas osa, jonka tekstinä on eräs Shakespearen synkemmistä soneteista. Se on kuvaus ajan kulun vääjäämättömyydestä, ja osan musiikki on jossain määrin velkaa Holstin Planeetat-teoksen Saturnus-osalle. Tämä osa on sarjan pisin ja raskain.

Who Is Silvia? (Kuka on Silvia?

A Scurvy Tune (Iljettävä nuotti; Myrsky, nimen käännös on Cajanderin suomennoksesta) on eräänlainen jälkilause.
