Marraskuun ruusu

Tuokio katoavaisuuden kauneutta

A rose of November - a moment of beauty in evanescence

for a modified sinfonietta

Description

Marraskuun ruusu (2018) is a gift of precarious years in my life: worry of a newborn, career anxiety, fear of all and fear of nothing. In the end, everything went fine (or at least that’s what I think now) but when I wrote the first sketches of this elegy in March 2016, everything felt up in the air.
While sketching, I came across a Karelian folk chorale melody that soothed me in many levels. Its intriguing opening made its way into an idée fixe of this gloomy tone sculpture for a tweaked Sinfonietta, and remnants of rest of it sparkle all over this piece.
The instrumentation is inspired by the compact and transparent orchestration of early Classicism, where I’ve inserted a pair of saxophones and replaced the continuo harpsichord with a guitar.
